Medicinal properties of Indian onion

The chemical composition and healing properties of Indian onions treatment, only 2 types of Ornithogalum are usually used – the caudate bird (indoor) and the umbrella bird (garden). It is these species that are recognized by folk medicine, and besides, these are the most accessible plants. Unfortunately, some of the properties of poultry can still be explained only on the basis of assumptions and comparisons with other, similar herbal remedies.

But most doctors admit that the leaves and bulbs of Ornithogalum contain a huge amount of biologically active substances, including antibiotics, and natural poisons – alkaloids. This huge group of nitrogen-containing substances has about 10 thousand names, the vast majority of alkaloids are of plant origin. The role played by alkaloids in plants is not fully understood. It is assumed that they are actively involved in the metabolism of amino acids. It is also believed that the plant produces these poisons for its own protection so that animals do not eat them. Alkaloids act on the human nervous system, so they have long been used in medicine, such as caffeine, morphine, ephedrine, as well as colchicine and colchicine – these two substances are found in the leaves and bulbs of the birdman.

They have been known for a long time, but for the first time they were not obtained from poultry farmers. Colchicine is obtained from the seeds of autumn colchicum, we mainly use 0.5 mg tablets. They treat gout, attacks of gouty arthritis. An improvement in the condition can be observed after 12 hours, but the medicine is used only by prescription and in certain doses. Colchicine has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect, inhibits the migration of leukocytes to the site of inflammation and prevents the deposition of uric acid microcrystals in the tissues. Colchicine is very toxic, it can cause side effects – diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, in these cases, treatment with this drug is cancelled or the dose is reduced.

If such a reaction has already been observed before, at the next attack, the combined preparation climax is prescribed, which contains, in addition to colchicine, phenobarbital (luminal) and opium. In particularly severe cases of gouty attacks, intravenous colchicine is sometimes administered. Colchicine has a lot of contraindications – pregnancy, kidney failure, liver disease, stomach ulcers, etc. Therefore, doctors are very careful when prescribing colchicine for preventive purposes, even in small doses. Lily bulbs also contain another, though less poisonous substance, calamine. The chemical formulas of colchicine and colchicine are almost identical, the former contains an acetamide group, the second has aminomethyl. Kolhamin is almost 8 times less toxic, therefore it is successfully used in official medicine for the treatment of skin cancer (introduced into ointments). An ointment based on kolhamin was developed 40 years ago in the USSR. According to clinical data, it cures skin cancer in 9 out of 10 patients. Colhamin preparations also treat relapses of breast cancer, oesophagal cancer, leukoplakia, and senile keratoses.

They say that a healing ointment can be prepared even at home, but at the same time it will cost a rather large amount. The drug, unfortunately, is difficult to obtain and expensive, and only a doctor can recommend it. In addition, the effectiveness and safety of internal use has not yet been proven by a sufficient number of experiments. But the fact that there may be side effects, the same as with long-term use of colchicine tablets, doctors recognize (nausea, diarrhea, hair loss). From the rich palette of various substances contained in the poultry plant, it is also worth mentioning essential oils, organic acids, various trace elements, and amino acids. The bactericidal substances of the leaves and bulbs of the birdman fight against pathogenic bacteria, stop inflammatory processes.

This property of the plant is used in the fight against such difficult-to-treat diseases as herpes, furunculosis, for the rapid healing of wounds and cuts. Fresh juice and tincture of the poultryman effectively affect the nervous and muscular systems, improve blood circulation, as well as the movement of lymph in the interstitial space. In this case, the effect is on peripheral blood vessels, the metabolism between blood and tissues is accelerated, and deeper vessels are not affected. The proof is the rapid resorption of the tumour with bruises after applying the leaves, as well as the almost instantaneous disappearance of bruises. It is also believed that the biologically active substances contained in Indian onions reduce blood clotting. Poisons and other biologically active substances contained in the leaves of the caudate tarantula and the umbrella tarantula help with radiculitis, osteochondrosis, joint pain of various origins, neuralgia and muscle pain.

How to be treated with Indian onions: What kind of poultry can be considered healing? So far, only two species have been mentioned in this connection – the caudate bird (Indian onion), which is mostly a houseplant, and the umbrella bird, which is mainly grown in open ground to decorate garden plots. As you know, the Indian bow was brought to Europe from South Africa. Under natural conditions, this is a very poisonous plant, especially its bulbs.

The amount of biologically active substances in the leaves and bulbs of the poultry plant is largely determined by the composition of the soil, climatic conditions, and proximity to other representatives of the flora. “Moving” to another continent could not but affect the properties of this plant. The indoor Indian onion is much less poisonous than its distant South African ancestor. But he, of course, retained most of his healing properties. Maybe, it is even better for us that in our conditions the action of the Indian bow is, as it were, softened. The fact that the leaves and bulbs of open-field poultry have a much stronger effect is said by everyone who has come across both types of this plant.

And it is very good that we have the opportunity to use a softer indoor poultry plant for medicinal purposes all year round, and in the summer to carry out procedures, prepare tinctures, ointments, lotions from the leaves, flowers and bulbs of garden bird plants. Any plant is a complex, living organism. Many of its biologically active substances and trace elements complement and enhance each other’s action. The isolation from a plant of specific substances with a specific chemical formula, the same colchicine and colchamine, which we have already spoken about, is aimed at preparing a medicine with a strictly defined effect.

And treatment with a chemical formula will not give the effect that is observed in the treatment with tinctures, ointments and fresh juice of the birdman. .Home pharmaceuticals fastest and most effective way to use the healing properties of the birdman is to rub the sore spot with a piece of freshly cut leaf. The juice of fresh leaves in many cases acts as an ambulance. But herbalists don’t stop there. They want to make the most of all the healing powers of this plant. In addition, according to many lovers of Indian onions, it is very inconvenient to attach leaves to a sore spot – they are difficult to fix, and the degree of contact with the skin changes rapidly, the bandage is either too tight or too weak. Plaster leaves are also difficult to attach. Therefore, it is still better to use juice or tincture, as well as a specially prepared ointment. In recent years, many recipes for tinctures, ointments, lotions from Indian onion leaves have been compiled, which are quite simple to make at home.

Indian bow and home cosmetics Facial lotion Used for mature skin. They take flowers and leaves of the caudate or umbrella bird. For two pinches of flowers and one pinch of crushed leaves, you need 100 g of vodka. To “grind” the leaves, it is advisable to use a sharp wooden spatula. It is better not to touch the Indian bow with metal knives. All components are thoroughly mixed in a glass jar (preferably dark glass), tightly closed with a lid and placed in a dark place. From time to time, the jar needs to be shaken – at least once every 3 days. After a month, the lotion is filtered.

Stored in the refrigerator. If the skin is dry, you can make a lotion based on dry red wine or dilute it with boiled water (30 g is enough). For oily skin, undiluted vodka is quite acceptable. Twice a day, moisten a cotton ball with lotion and lightly tap it on the skin of the face and neck. This simple procedure enhances blood circulation, smoothes wrinkles, and makes the skin more elastic. You can apply compresses with lotion – for 20 minutes, a maximum of half an hour. First, wipe your face with moisturizing cosmetic milk, then slightly moisten a thin layer of cotton wool or soft cotton cloth with lotion, put it on your forehead, cheeks, chin (it is better to close your eyes with goggles), cover the cotton with compress paper and tie a scarf on top.

After 20 minutes, the compress should be carefully removed and rinsed with cold water. You can not massage and rub the skin of the face and neck with a tincture or lotion of a birdman – this can cause redness that will not go away long enough (for some it lasts almost 5 days), and in the future – peeling. In addition, using tinctures and decoctions of the flowers of the birdman, do not forget that all these drugs are poisonous! If there are small children in the house, it is better to forget about tinctures altogether for a while. Also, do not allow the lotion to get into your eyes. Before preparing a lotion for yourself from a tincture or diluting it before preparing an ointment, you need to test the reaction of the skin on a small area.

If the redness does not go away for a long time, you need to dilute with plenty of water. Flower tincture Prepared from the flowers of the umbelliferous (garden) bird. The flowering period of this plant is quite short, but the tincture prepared in the summer can then be used until spring. They take a jar of dark glass with a wide neck and a ground stopper (you can also use a test tube, but then it must be kept in a dark place all the time). Fresh petals fill the dishes up to half and pour 96% medical alcohol, so so that the flowers are completely covered and there is still a layer of alcohol of 3-4 cm.

The jar must be tightly closed and put away for a month in a dark, cool place (if it stays a little longer, it’s not scary). Part of the finished tincture is poured into a separate bowl (also dark glass) and diluted with boiled water either by 3/4 or 2/3, depending on which skin the tincture is intended for. For dry, you need to dilute more. The tincture is diluted in small portions as needed, and all this time the flowers remain in the bowl with alcohol. Wipe the face with a cotton swab dipped in a tincture of flowers every morning.

This remedy soothes and at the same time tones tired skin, relieves irritation and has an antiseptic effect. It helps with problem skin, as well as with a tendency to allergic reactions. Especially useful tincture in winter and spring. Keeps for a very long time. Bulb tincture It is also usually prepared from the umbrella bird, in a ratio of 1:20 (one volume part of raw materials – chopped onions – and 20 parts of 70% medical alcohol). The mixture is insisted in a jar of dark glass for a month and a half, filtered. Stored in the refrigerator. Before use, a small amount of tincture is poured into another container and diluted either by half or by 2/3. It all depends on the individual characteristics of your skin. Similarly, in the future, you will be able to understand what volume ratio you need to follow when preparing a tincture. Some people calmly tolerate the ratio of 1:10 and believe that such a tool is much more effective.

There are testimonies of people who use this tincture to treat various skin rashes, boils, as well as to remove benign formations on the face and age spots. Tonic mask The mask includes baby cream, a little purified white clay mixed with water and tincture – it takes everything by eye to make a liquid slurry that quickly solidifies and does not flow down the face. The mass is slightly warmed up and applied to the face, carefully avoiding contact with the eyes, then covered with plastic wrap with holes for the eyes, nose and mouth. Keep the mask on the face for no more than 15 minutes, then gently (with eyes closed) rinse off with warm water and immediately apply a soothing cream. Lotion for problem skin To prepare it, you need aloe leaves.

They take one large leaf of aloe, one leaf of the birdman, grind it with a wooden spatula or grind it in a porcelain mortar, pour the mass with boiled and cooled to 90 ° C water (1 -1.5 cups, depending on the size of the leaves), cover the dishes with a lid, insist an hour and a half, then filter. In the finished lotion, you can add a little tincture of calendula. Wipe the face with infusion 2 times a day. In this case, do not allow the product to get into the eyes. Massage oil (from cellulite and for rubbing joints) Peach or almond oil is taken for its preparation, olive oil can also be used. There are two ways of cooking – with a faster one, a small amount of juice of freshly cut leaves of Indian onion or umbellate bird is added to slightly warmed vegetable oil, mixed thoroughly.

The usual proportion is 5 ml of juice to 50 ml of oil. You can also heat vegetable oil in a water bath and pour crushed leaves over it, leave for 5-6 hours and then drain into a separate glass dish. Before use, massage oil must be heated to a temperature 2 degrees higher than body temperature. The massage procedure can be carried out independently, but also on warm skin (take a warm bath). It is recommended to use only for the treatment of cellulite on the thighs and buttocks, do not massage the stomach with it. The oil is rubbed into the “problem” skin of the thighs in a circular motion. It is very good to use special elastic massage caps and simultaneously massage both thighs with both hands.

Caps must be used carefully – rub the oil evenly, do not allow the skin to be “absorbed” into the cap for a long time – bruises may appear, and they will have to be treated separately with fresh Indian onion leaves. The duration of the procedure is 10-15 minutes, depending on the individual characteristics of the skin. Everyone can determine this time for themselves. Cover the heated skin with a woolen cloth, then, to enhance the effect, with compress paper or plastic wrap and put on woollen tights or elastic trousers. If there is a strong burning sensation, rinse everything with warm water and spread with a soothing ointment or baby cream.

If the skin on the legs is delicate, massage oil, if rubbed too intensely, can leave unaesthetic red spots for a long time. An important addition: if any home-made cosmetics based on the leaves of the birdman cause unnecessary (sometimes just such an irritating effect, many women achieve) or prolonged irritation, you can wipe the skin first with ammonia, and then lubricate it with baby cream mixed with sea buckthorn oil, or chamomile infusion.

Indian onion leaf tincture they take freshly cut chopped Indian onion leaves and pour them with ordinary vodka (40% alcohol) or 70% medical alcohol bought at a pharmacy. For potent agents (including poultry), a volume ratio of 1:20 is recommended. Insist on alcohol in a dark place in a glass, enamel or porcelain dish for 7-10 days, filter, wring out the residue, filter and mix both solutions. Store the tincture in the refrigerator. Some connoisseurs prefer to use an alcoholic gruel along with the remains of the leaves, however, according to most herbalists, the filtered tincture is better stored, and in itself it is safer. To relieve muscle pain in the cervical region, you can use rubbing with a tincture of tarantula flowers (see the chapter Indian onions and home cosmetics). This is a mild tincture.

Compresses from the leaves of Indian onion This method is used mainly for the deposition of salts, for arthritic pain. Prepare not too strong tincture – in a ratio of 1:20. The compress is laid as follows: first, a soft cotton cloth or gauze soaked in tincture, then plastic wrap or special paper for compresses, a layer of cotton wool or woollen cloth; all together bandaged to the diseased joint.

The compress is kept for several hours, usually overnight. Indian onion leaves ointment ointments with Indian onions are mainly used as an irritant and warming agent for pains of nervous and muscular origin. Helps with pain in the muscles, joints, neuralgic pain, sciatica, rheumatism. The ointment can be prepared both with fresh juice of Indian onion leaves, and with tincture. Animal fat is taken as the basis – beef, pork, goose. It must be pre-cleaned and melted in a water bath. Most animal fats have good penetrating power, however, such ointments do not store for a long time. Butter is mentioned separately, although it also refers to animal fats. A harmless base, besides, you can prepare an ointment from it very quickly, but you need to use such a tool right away, you can’t store it for a long time. Other basics:

  • vegetable oil – not only the usual corn, sunflower, olive oil, but also peach, almond, apricot and even cocoa butter;
  • lanolin; in its pure form, it can cause allergic reactions, therefore, for the preparation of ointments at home, it is better to take purchased lanolin milk or lanolin cream;
  • beeswax; used in a mixture with other bases – with vegetable or spermaceti oil; solid refractory ointments are prepared from it, which are applied to sore spots (small areas of the skin) for a relatively long time – for several hours or all night;
  • petrolatum; ointments based on it are stored for a long time, but it poorly penetrates the skin, so it is better to use it for products with which you are going to smear areas of the body with delicate skin, as well as for ointments that need to be left on the skin for a long time.

Attention! If we use the fresh juice of Indian onion leaves to prepare the ointment, it should not be stored for a long time under any circumstances. Maximum – a week, and in the refrigerator. It is best to mix fresh juice with the ointment base immediately before applying to the skin – this way our remedy will be more effective. Ointments prepared with alcohol tincture can be stored for some time in the refrigerator (up to a month), as well as the tincture itself.

However, here you should not forget what kind of base you used – I repeat once again that products based on animal fat, especially butter, egg white, can quickly deteriorate. And yet – most likely, you will be forced to use the ointment immediately, if only because that it is hardly possible to obtain a relatively large amount of milky juice from the leaves – unless you keep 10-15 pots of Indian onions at home. Therefore, you need to calculate all recipes for small quantities of components.

Oil balm (for a warming bandage) The balm usually contains fir and olive oil, Vishnevsky ointment and Indian onion juice in a ratio of 0.5:1:1:0.5. At home, it is difficult to strictly observe these proportions, so usually, everything is mixed right before use, by eye, making sure that fir oil and Indian onion juice are 2 times less than the rest of the components. For oil and fresh juice are added to the balm last. You can not store this balm for a long time. Ointment based on egg whitePour 30 ml of alcoholic tincture of Indian onion leaves into a porcelain cup, add 3 egg whites and stir quickly.

The sore joints are lightly rubbed with ointment, wrapped with paper for compresses, then with a woolen cloth, washed off after 2 hours and again wrapped with something woollen. Vaseline ointment Take by volume – one part of fresh juice of Indian onion leaves, 5 parts of vaseline. Vaseline is placed in a porcelain cup, slightly heated in a water bath (up to about 40 ° C), the plant juice is slowly poured into the vaseline and mixed thoroughly. Store the ointment in the refrigerator. star of Bethlehem turns out that in foreign pharmacology, poultry has long been part of not only medicinal ointments but also various cosmetics.

In the world classification, it has its own “legalized” name – Ornithogalum UmBellatum Extract, an extract from the bulbs of the umbelliferous bird. At home, an extract (a concentrated extract from plant materials) is very difficult to obtain. Although, in fact, this is the same tincture, enhanced several times; when it is prepared in the same amount of alcohol, the vegetable raw materials are changed several times – crushed leaves or bulbs of the birdman. As an example of drugs, ointments, creams and gels can be cited under the general name Dermafarin® Bioenergetic (“Dermafarin bioenergetic”), the English name is Star of Bethlehem (Star of Bethlehem).
